Hello from Hervey Bay! Just returned from a fantastic 2 day trip to Fraser island. We left from Hervey Bay on Monday morning and crossed over by ferry to the island. We met with our tour guide and our 4×4 coach that was going to take us exploring for the next 2 days. We went through the middle of the island on the sand tracks and out on to the beach where we parked up and trekked in through the rainforest to lake Wabby, a beautiful lake at the bottom of huge sand dunes. Had a dip there amongst the big black fish!
After this we headed to Eurong beach resort where we would be staying. The place was lovely, right on the beach and the rooms were a little bit of luxury after all the hostels – not that they are bad, we’ve been very lucky so far! Had a lovely buffet lunch and then hopped back on the 4×4 to lake McKensie. This was one of the highlights of the trip. We swam in the gorgeous lake, as Warren our tour guide described it, it’s like ’swimming in a giant puddle’ – freshwater with white sand beneath your feet and no sea creatures! Heaven!
Orla bumped into a girl from Gort, so we hooked up with them for a few drinks in the beach bar later that evening. I entered a pool competition but was knocked out on the second game by ‘old Pete’, one of the local islanders who kept calling me a leprechaun – cheers Pete ![]()
It was an early start this morning. We once again headed off in the 4×4 with Warren for an action packed day of adventure. Warren was an excellent tour guide and told us everything there is to know about the island and the rest! We headed off down the beach, stopping to photograph some dingoes. We then had the choice to take a plane ride over the island! Somehow, Orla persuaded me to board the 8 seater plane (think I was still asleep!?) and off we went over the island and the lakes and the ocean. It was well worth it and not a bit scary! The big ones are 10 times worse!

Afterwards, it was back on the coach where we went off exploring the headlands (Indian head) and spotted some humpback whales jumping up out of the water – cool! We also visited Eli creek and the Maheno shipwreck. On the way back to the ferry, we spotted a huge python on the side of the road – thank God we were on the coach for that one!
So, we’re back in the hostel in Hervey bay. I can’t believe it’s still the same day. We’ve done so much. Hervey Bay itself is very quiet and a very spread out town, so we’ve just stuck to the hostel, which has everything we need – pool, tennis courts, bar, restaurant. So it’s on to Brisbane tommorrow at 9:25 – yippee a lie in for me
9.25 a lie in! She’s lost the run of herself… I’ve seen days when you struggled to get up for 9.25PM. Sounds great anyway. Chat soon
